St. Thomas, Owen Sound

The following is a report from The Brotherhood of Anglican Churchmen at St. Thomas Church in Owen Sound, Ont.

In January, and for the next few months the focus is on the annual conference which was in our own deanery, Meaford, St. George’s and St. Thomas Church - Owen Sound.

We also have a Mother’s Day event to thank all the Ladies of the Church for the help we receive.

In June is our Annual Fish Supper which was a great success.

We were able to give some funds to the church in June to help with the renovation loan.

Also in June and in September we put on a barbeque for the end of Sunday School and the start of the Fall Session.

We invited St. George’s BAC Men, Christ Church, Meaford to our church in November.

In October we gave funds to St. Monica House, Huron Church Camp and the Huron College Bursary.

We look forward to 2007, the conference, more members, and doing God’s service in our church, and where we go.

St.  Monica House

This month, we celebrate Valentine, and the gift of love from our Creator.  But in the midst of that, I am painfully aware that this is not the reality for so many of the young women that come to Saint Monica House.  It is heartbreaking to hear their stories of parental rejection, abuse and of how society points a finger for having not made better choices.  A will often, in the most difficult time of their life, they feel total abandonment by family and friends, and by God.  Rather than feeling God’s warm embrace, all they feel is judgement and punishment.  The path to God then is not easy and straight.  It is full of detours, change and confusion.  One recent new resident expressed her thankfulness for St. Monica House, for here she was not ridiculed and put down.  She views this time as an opportunity to, “get her life back on track.”  Perhaps, as she is supported and respected, she will find a dignity that she hasn’t had before

This work here then, is not merely to “get girls through their pregnancy and equip them with parenting skills”, but to help them discover that they are worthwhile human beings, to be redeemed and loved by God.  God does not abandon them, but rather holds them in the palm of his hand. Pray that this will become a reality in our women’s lives, as the staff reflects the love of God for them.  Your prayer support is vital and enables the Mission to bear fruit.

Please uphold the following prayer requests:

·                      Pray for a young mother who is experiencing serious health problems.

·                      Pray for academic success as our young mothers complete this semester.

·                      Pray for a young mother and her baby as she returns to her family home.

·                      Pray for staff vacancies to be filled with competent, caring and compassionate professionals.

·                      Give thanks for our many benefactors and the creative ways in which they fund-raise for us.

·                      Pray that our young women will find the strength and support to get out of love-less relationships.

·                      Pray that our new residents may find support as they make the transition from community to residential life.

Sincerely,

Rev’d Darlene Cunliffe

Chaplin, St. Monica House
